BYSD was established in 1999 at St Andrews Centre, Penrith by ex-professional dancer – Marie Booth.
The aim of the school is to give children confidence and a sense of achievement through the teaching of various dance forms and above all, to have fun while doing it.As well as having fun the lessons are aimed towards professional examinations, and as such follow a structured and comprehensive dance syllabus. However, taking exams is not obligatory although the the sense of acheivement after taking them only adds to a childs confidence.
Exam results have constantly been some of the highest awarded by both the IDTA and ISTD.
During the last sixteen years, the school has grown from strength to strength with lessons being held most evenings during the week and all day on Saturdays at St Andrews Centre, Penrith.
BYSD holds annual Summer Schools, including singing, dance and drama using fully qualified teachers; which culminate with a Grande Performance on the last night of the Summer School. These are always a big hit with all members of the dance school.
BYSD is a very busy dance school, there is always something going on whatever the time of year – whether it is exam time or one of the many performances.
Many ex-pupils have gone on to study various disciplins of the performing arts at higher education.
