The main aim of the dance school is to give children the opportunity to learn various dance styles while having fun and meeting new friends. Lessons are well structured and lead to children being able to take examinations (if desired) under the IDTA.
Classes are held at Brampton Community Centre, Ivegill Village Hall and Kirkoswald Village Hall.
Classes are for children aged 3 years and above.
The dance school holds annual Christmas Shows where all children are invited to perform. Shows are held at Harraby Community Theatre. The school has also performed at various local events including Brampton’s Royal Wedding Street Party, The Stepping Stones Festival, Hayton Summer Fayre, Brampton Summer Fayre and The Watson Institute, Castle Carrock.
The annual Summer School is a very popular event. This involves spending one week learning and rehearsing routines to then showcase on the final evening.
In April 2014, Nicola took 20 pupils to perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London.
In October 2015, Nicola took a group of dancers to perform on board a Mediterranean Cruise Ship as part of the professional entertainments team.
In November 2016, NISD returned to Her Majesty’s Theatre where 35 pupils performed.
In October 2018, NISD performed as part of the professional entertainments team on the MSC Fantasia Cruise Ship.
In March 2020, NISD returned to the West End where pupils performed at The Shaftesbury Theatre.
Many students of NISD have been lucky enough to perform at the annual Christmas Pantomime held at The Sands Centre, Carlisle and also with the English Youth Ballet (with many students being awarded scholarships and special recognition prizes). Pupils have also been successful when auditioning to perform with a local company; Dance Ahead.
Some pupils have been lucky enough to go through to the International Dance Theatre Awards.
Several pupils have gone on to further their dancing careers at prestigious colleges / schools.
NISD was nominated as a finalist in the Dance School of the Year Awards 2016 and 2017.

- Miss Nicola IvinsonPrincipal
Nicola has been dancing since the age of five and has performed in various local, national and international productions up until her late teens.
She has worked with well known names such as Wayne Sleep and Ian McCleod from the Royal Scottish Ballet.
Nicola has been teaching since September 2008 and has been Principal of her own dance school since April 2010.
Nicola qualified under the Northern Counties Dance Teachers' Association in the summer of 2008 and in July 2011, graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with a First Class BA(Hons) Degree in Dance Studies. In 2013, she qualified as an Associate member of the International Dance Teachers’ Association (IDTA). Nicola has also gained Level 4 Diplomas in Modern Jazz and Tap under the IDTA, as well as Licentiate Degrees of the Ballet, Modern Jazz, Tap and Theatre Craft Faculties with the IDTA. Nicola also holds a Fellowship Ballet Qualification with the IDTA.
Nicola is a licensed teacher of ‘Melody Movement’, ‘Tip Tap Toe and Groovy Moves’, ‘First Ballet’, and ‘First Tap and Modern’.
Nicola has taught in many local primary schools.
Nicola has fully enhanced DBS credentials and is also a registered chaperone with Cumbria County Council Children's Services Department.
Nicola is a qualified first aider.Miss Melissa BlaylockTeaching AssistantMelissa and Nicola have danced together for many years, first meeting at their local dance school.
Melissa assists at the Christmas Shows, during lessons and on examination days. She is also involved in the Summer School.
