Afonso School of Performing Arts is a new and exciting school for dance and theatre arts, offering classes in BALLET, TAP, JAZZ and MUSICAL THEATRE to children aged 2 – 12 years. We also offer commercial, lyrical contemporary, drama, singing and acrobatics. Plus pre-school Melody Bear classes. The establishment is based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and run by husband and wife team, Alicia and Ricardo Afonso, both West End professionals, with credits including We Will Rock You, Chicago, Top Hat, Thriller Live and BBC1’s The Voice UK.
We aim to create a fun, yet disciplined environment in which our students can develop skills in dance, acting and singing. Our vision is to offer the highest standard of training possible to children from as young as 18 months. Our team aim to use their combined experience, both as teachers and professionals, to help produce exciting and inspiring lessons where the children will learn skills for life. With combined commitment and hard work from both the students and teachers, we hope to be able to create opportunities for our students within the industry, in the near future.

- Alicia Afonso LIDTAPrincipal and owner
Alicia trained at the Elizabeth Hill School of Dance and Drama. She then went on to train professionally at Phil Winston's Theatreworks on a 3 year dance and musical theatre course. Alicia is proud to say she once held the title of Miss Dance of Great Britain. She was also the winner of the Janet Cramm Awards, and other titles such as All of England, British and International Champion in ballet, modern and tap. Alicia has 12 years of teaching experience, and has been choreographing dance school shows and competitions around the UK, as well as running musical theatre workshops. She has held the musical theatre lectures at the IDTA and ADA annual congresses and was invited to teach the modern jazz class at the IDTA Theatre Awards in 2013. Alica is also a regular adjudicator for dance competitions in the UK. Now a mother of two, Alicia is excited about her latest project running a performing arts school. She is a Licentiate member of the IDTA and aspires to become an examiner one day.
Kate Garvie AISTDBallet and tap teacherKate is originally from Lancashire where she started dancing at the age of three, going on to train at Northern Ballet School in Manchester on the professional musical theatre course where she also gained her ISTD teaching qualifications. Upon graduation Kate was cast in her first musical, West Side Story at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre. She has worked extensively around the world performing both onstage and on television in Paris, Berlin, Switzerland, Australia and cruising the world as dance captain for Princess Cruises. Her additional musical theatre credits include Cats - Hamburg, Disney's Beauty and the Beast - Stuttgart and a return to West Side Story as dance captain. Kate has over 25 years teaching experience at local dance schools, primary schools and stage schools. After taking a break to have children Kate rejoined the industry teaching Fitsteps ( adults dance fitness classes www.fitsteps.co.uk ) and is delighted to be joining Afonso School of Performing Arts.
Ricardo AfonsoArtistic Director and musical theatre teacherRicardo recently appeared in the new musical, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, where he played the role of the Taxi Driver alongside the wonderful Tamsin Grieg. Theatre credits: Thriller Live (Lyric Theatre, Lonodon); Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown directed by Bartlett Sher; Top Hat The Musical (London and UK tour) directed by Matthew White; We Will Rock You (London); Strictly Come Dancing- The Professionals UK tour; Ghost, directed by Matthew Warchus; A Rock and Symphonic Spectacular. Recording credits (UK): Paradise Lost by Lee Ormsby and Jonathan Wakeham; One Not Two by Tim Prottey-Jones; Dreamer for the album based on the Terry Pratchett book Only You Can Save Mankind composed by Leighton James House; The Meerkat Muchachos composed by Matthew Jameson. Ricardo appeared on The Voice UK 2013 on Team Danny. He also fronted the cast of We Will Rock You in the opening of the handover ceremony for the Olympic Games 2012, live on BBC1 and in front of Buckingham Palace.
